Happy Cinco de Mayo…
Big changes are coming to hemp and CBD laws in Mexico!
It’s Cinco de Mayo. No, it’s not a celebration of Mexican Independence as some people think. Sometimes called Anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, Cinco de Mayo is actually a holiday celebrated in parts of Mexico and the United States in honor of a Mexican military victory in 1862 over the French forces of Napoleon III. While it took another 5 years to fully drive out the French, the Battle of Puebla was undoubtedly the turning point.
In the US, we’ve come to accept Cinco de Mayo as an opportunity to celebrate with tequila, Mexican foods and beer. However this year, in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic, the celebrations are certainly going to be curtailed. So we thought it would provide a good excuse to update you on important changes to cannabis laws coming soon in Mexico.
Mexico’s Supreme Court found Mexico’s marijuana laws unconstitutional and gave the legislature until early this year to enact new legislation to fully legalize all forms of cannabis, including hemp. With the covid-19 pandemic, that deadline has now been extended to December 15th. But the legalization is coming! See detailed story here: https://mjbizdaily.com/deadline-to-legalize-marijuana-in-mexico-extended-again/
It’s not that we’re big marijuana advocates here at Imbue as you know, but the legalization of marijuana in Mexico may well pull the rug out from under much of the Cartel activity associated with the current drug trade that has caused such widespread destruction and violence on both sides of the border. And for that we’re most thankful.
But the inclusion of hemp and hemp-related products in the legalization means that our neighbors to the south will now be able to get full access to products like ours. For a country that is used to buying ethical pharmaceuticals over- the-counter, this will mark a shift in their ability to access products that can truly make a profound difference in their overall health. And we’re excited!
So there you have it. A bit of history and a bit of global politics all rolled up in a journal article on Cinco de Mayo. We do wish it was under better circumstances and we could wish you tons of fun as you celebrate, but nonetheless, Happy Cinco de Mayo from all of us at Imbue Botanicals.
with all our best,
Tom
