The Glycerin Advantage

Many people ask us why we use 100% kosher, organic vegetable glycerin in our people and pet tinctures. It’s unusual in the industry based on the fact that most other companies combine their hemp oil with other “unflavorful” oils such as coconut or olive oil, add flavoring to cover the unpleasant taste and perhaps add stabilizers to keep the oil from separating.

Most other companies use this “oil-based” formulation because, frankly, it’s easier to mix oil with oil. But at im.bue, it’s never been about easy with us. Rather, it’s always been about creating a better product.

So when we developed our tinctures, we literally went on a shopping spree and purchased virtually every competitive product we could find. We sampled them all, and the overwhelming conclusion was, they didn’t taste good!

So we incorporated our oil into 99.7% purity USP grade Kosher certified Vegetable Glycerin made exclusively from palm fruit. Our vegetable glycerin is made by the process of hydrogenolysis, which removes the fatty acids, leaving pure vegetable glycerin. It’s metabolized in the body like a carbohydrate, it is easily digested, and its sweet taste makes it an excellent substitute for sugar.

So unlike other products on the market, ours actually tastes good. And not just to people, but to pets as well. And because it does, we can keep ingredients to a bare minimum. Check our label. All of our tinctures contain only 2 ingredients: our organic hemp oil and our kosher, organic vegetable glycerin. That’s it.

But there’s more to the story. It has to do with how our product is metabolized. Rather than using an oil base which is broken down and absorbed by the body more slowly, our product is carbohydrate-based which aids in a much more rapid breakdown and absorption. The result… it goes “to work” faster!

Use of commercial palm products, we admit, does come with some environmental concerns. That's why we use suppliers that source their palm fruit 100% from Malaysia, utilizing only the Malaysian Pygmy Palm. Unlike countries like Indonesia where there are virtually no regulations on palm oil plantations and their expansion, Malaysia has a track record of creating a better approach. In 2004, Malaysia established The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil. The group, currently headed by Darrel Webber who previously worked for the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) in Sabah, includes members from across the industry from planters to buyers, NGOs and bankers.Together, the RSPO has created what it believes are globally credible standards covering the environment, local communities and labor standards. Those who don’t comply face investigation and suspension.
